Scientific learning should teach reasoning, not only facts

Answer in brief
Completing a course tells you a learner was exposed to content. It does not tell you whether they can reason with it when the situation changes. Academy is designed around that distinction — it keeps viewed, practised, passed, and demonstrated as four separate, honestly labeled states, rather than one completion checkmark that quietly stands in for all four.
Why "completed" is not the same claim as "competent"
A curriculum can be completed by a learner who memorized the material closely enough to pass a quiz and would still misapply it to an unfamiliar case. That gap is not a flaw in any particular learner — it is a structural property of measuring exposure rather than measuring transfer. A learning system that reports only completion is, whether it intends to or not, making a narrower claim than most people read into the word "complete."
Four distinct claims, not one
Academy's core capabilities are versioned scientific knowledge, connected learning pathways, and evidence of learning.[1] The pathway itself — Today, Path, Map, Evidence — is built to keep a learner oriented in what they are doing now, where it fits, and what they have actually shown, rather than presenting a flat list of modules.[1]
Within that, four states stay distinct rather than being collapsed:
- Viewed — the learner has seen the material.
- Practised — the learner has worked with it, without a scored outcome attached yet.
- Passed — the learner met a scored threshold on an assessment.
- Demonstrated — the learner has shown the competence in a context that requires applying it, not just recalling it.
None of the first three implies the fourth. A learner can be practised without having passed anything yet; a learner can have passed a quiz without the system claiming they have demonstrated the underlying competence in a transferable way. Why this requires versioned knowledge
None of this works if the curriculum itself can drift silently out of date relative to the science it teaches. Academy's versioned scientific knowledge means a curriculum traces to a source, and a human academic authority — not an automated content pipeline — sets what the curriculum actually contains.[1] Evidence of competence is only meaningful if it is evidence of competence in something current.
Practical implications
For an institution evaluating a learning platform for scientific or health-adjacent training, the useful question is not "does it track completion." Nearly every platform does. The useful question is whether it can produce evidence that a specific learner can apply the reasoning to a case they have not seen before — and whether that evidence is kept distinct from the much weaker claim that they finished the material.
Limitations and uncertainty
Academy is at foundation stage: its direction and interface are designed, and the distinctions described in this article are part of that design, but no public application is released yet, so there is not yet an operating history of demonstrated-competence evidence to report on.
